CKI global revenue is expected to reach US$ 5 billion this year, said Mr Ketchum. The revenue will come from the sale of apparel, accessories, fragrances and cosmetics and home products.

Signalling the seriousness of its intent, CKI set up its first Asian regional office in Hongkong late last year.

CKI plans to have two or three freestanding boutiques in every major city in Asia so "that everyone can see what Christian louboutin shoes is all about".

"Ready-to-wear designers are becoming stronger in the shoe market," said Bonnie Pressman, executive vice president of Barneys New York. "They're very specific in how they see a total look."

For Marc Jacobs, who has designed his own Christian Louboutin Boots for two years, a collection starts not with fabric or divine inspiration but with shoes. "I really start the collection from the ground up," he said. "The proportion and style of the shoe inspires me to make what comes next, whether a dress, a skirt, a coat or pants."

She was at Manolo Blahnik on West 54th Street, and there on a high perch was the barest black sandal, with a whisper of a sling back and instep collar and a slender ribbon of leather bejeweled with a branch of fake coral designed to slither down the length of the foot and disappear between the toes. The sandal evoked romance, dancing under a canopy of stars (not Manhattan), yachts bobbing in the harbor.
